Bringing Nature Indoors: My Guide to Preserved Moss & Resin Wall Art

I have always loved bringing elements of nature into my artwork. There is something very calming about natural textures, greenery and water-inspired designs, especially when they become part of the space we live or work in.

At RishStudio, I create handcrafted preserved moss wall art, resin landscapes, moss and resin river art, botanical wall pieces and bespoke installations. Over the years, I have made pieces for private homes as well as offices, restaurants, spas and other commercial spaces.

One of the things I am asked most often is, “Is the moss real?” Closely followed by, “Do I need to water it?”

So I thought I would put together some of the questions I receive most frequently about preserved moss art and resin wall art.

Is Preserved Moss Real?

Yes! The moss I use in my artwork is real natural moss that has been preserved.

Preservation allows the moss to retain its natural appearance and texture without continuing to grow. This means it doesn't need soil, watering or sunlight.

This is very different from a living moss wall, which contains live plants and normally requires ongoing care and suitable growing conditions.

Preserved moss wall art is designed for indoor decoration and is particularly useful when you want to introduce greenery into a space without having to look after another houseplant.

Does Preserved Moss Need Water or Sunlight?

No. In fact, you should never water preserved moss.

Because the moss is no longer living, it doesn't need sunlight either. I recommend keeping preserved moss artwork away from strong direct sunlight, as prolonged UV exposure can gradually affect the natural colours.

This makes moss art particularly suitable for spaces where keeping live plants can be difficult, including offices, hallways, reception areas and rooms with limited natural light.

One important consideration is humidity. I don't recommend my preserved moss artwork for very hot, steamy or consistently damp bathrooms. Excessive moisture can affect preserved natural materials and may eventually encourage mould.

How Long Does Preserved Moss Wall Art Last?

With the right indoor conditions, good-quality preserved moss can remain beautiful for many years.

From my experience working with preserved moss, the most important thing is the environment in which the artwork is displayed.

Keep it indoors, don't water it, avoid prolonged direct sunlight and keep it away from very damp environments or strong heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces.

Reindeer moss can sometimes feel slightly drier when indoor humidity becomes very low, particularly during winter when central heating is running. This is normal and doesn't mean the moss needs watering.

Can You Combine Real Moss With Epoxy Resin?

Absolutely! And this is actually one of my favourite combinations to work with.

I often combine preserved moss with epoxy resin to create miniature landscapes, rivers, coastlines, waterfalls and aerial-style scenes.

I build these pieces in layers, using materials such as preserved moss, natural bark, wood, stone, sand, dried botanicals and resin.

The resin can become a turquoise coastline, a deep blue river or a tiny pond running through the landscape. When everything is brought together, the finished artwork can almost feel like you are looking down at a miniature landscape from above.

Some of my pieces also include details such as koi fish, tiny figures, flowers or lighting, depending on the design.

Because every landscape is created by hand, no two pieces are exactly the same.

How Do You Clean Preserved Moss Wall Art?

Preserved moss wall art is very low maintenance.

Most of the time, you can simply leave it alone.

If dust builds up over time, gently remove it with a soft feather duster. You can also use a hairdryer on a cool, very low setting, held at a safe distance from the moss.

Never spray the moss with water or cleaning products.

For resin areas, I recommend using a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive materials or strong chemical cleaners that could damage the resin surface.

Can Moss Wall Art Be Made to a Custom Size?

Yes. Bespoke work is a large part of what I do at RishStudio.

I can create artwork according to the dimensions of your wall and adapt many designs to suit your interior.

Depending on the project, you can choose different frame finishes, moss styles, botanical details, resin colours and landscape elements.

I also create custom moss signs, logos, lettering, mirrors and larger moss wall installations for businesses and commercial interiors.

For larger pieces, I can sometimes create the artwork as several connecting panels. This makes transportation and installation much easier while still creating the appearance of one continuous artwork once installed.

Is Every RishStudio Piece Handmade?

Yes. My work is genuinely handmade.

I design and create each piece in my studio in the UK. From arranging the moss and natural materials to creating the resin water and adding the smallest landscape details, there is a lot of hands on work behind each finished artwork.
